Our April 18, 2017 meeting is just around the corner. Please RSVP as soon as possible. The April meeting typically is exciting because this meeting provides an opportunity to recognize our Scholarship Recipients, as well as receive updates from the Michigan Counseling Association, our umbrella organization. At each of our general membership meetings, we participate in the 50/50 Scholarship Raffle. Our Scholarship Committee, under the leadership of Bob Foreback, has been diligently reviewing applications to identify the scholarship recipients. We will learn about these young people and recognize their abilities and scholarly accomplishments on Tuesday. This is always one of my favorite meetings. We will also hear from our MCA President, Melanie Popiolek who has been representing our state counseling associations at the regional and national counseling association meetings. I am sure she has good news for us about some of the opportunities in which members can participate that will be available in the near future. One of the more interesting projects she has been working on is "growing our leaders". It will be great to hear about the progress that has been made in this and other initiatives! As always, I look forward to seeing you next Tuesday, at Baker College for our general meeting! Angela Angela M. Reeves, Ed.D. Licensed Professional Counselor Masters Social Worker License President, GACA Happy New Year! I hope everyone is rested, refreshed and ready to be engaged! Our first meeting of the year is fast approaching: 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on February 7, 2017 at Davenport University located on the campus of Mott Community College in the RTC Room 1301. We will discuss issues related to LGTBQ – a timely topic. There have been many legislative changes and this topic has been in the news around the country. The more we, as counselors, know about those who identify as LGBTQ or are struggling with gender identification, the more effective we will be in assisting and advocating for our students, clients and friends. We will also discuss counseling best practices - this is a popular activity that we try to do at least once a year. As counselors, there are many effective strategies that we can share with one another. I know I always pick up at least one and often several best practices that I can use! Please bring at least one best practice to share with everyone! Please RSVP by Friday, January 27, 2017 to ensure adequate planning for this meeting on the "Meetings Page - February 7 meeting" on this website. We don’t always know what someone may be struggling with, but we can be prepared to provide acceptance, respect and needed assistance.
We look forward to learning more and seeing each of you February 7, 2017! Angela Angela M. Reeves, Ed.D. Licensed Professional Counselor Masters Social Worker License President, GACA , As you may remember, our next meeting will be next week (11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.). We are excited to begin the discussion about Human Trafficking! A Michigan State Trooper who also serves on the Human Trafficking Task Force, will be presenting. A copy of the licensure requirements has been provided. If you would like a certificate verifying your attendance and participation, please indicate so when you sign in. Come join us for this very important topic! I suspect we will want more information, as we realize the many facets of this topic! The meeting will be:
We look forward to seeing you there! Angela Angela M. Reeves, Ed.D. Licensed Professional Counselor Masters Social Worker License President, GACA Don’t forget our December 6, 2016 meeting! We will be at Kettering University and our topic will be “Human Trafficking”. There have been questions about whether this session will satisfy the Human Trafficking requirement for counselor licensure purposes and we believe it will. The presenter is a Michigan State Trooper who serves on the Human Trafficking Task Force and has some familiarity with the required content areas identified in the legislation. As is true of many concepts, one session typically scratches the surface and provides a basic overview. As counselors, we are uniquely positioned to identify possible victims, and act to address the issue. We need to know much more and we especially need to know how to effectively advocate for possible victims! We are very excited about this introduction to Human Trafficking and hope that it is the first of several sessions addressing this topic. Please be sure to RSVP on the website before November 29, 2016. I look forward to seeing you on December 6th at Kettering! Angela Angela M. Reeves, Ed.D.
